The Surprise Lily
One of first plants to emerge in my garden is the Surprise Lily, (Lycoris squamigera) also known as Hardy Amaryllis, Resurrection Lily, as well as many others.
The plant acquired its name by its unusual growth habit. Leaves sprout very early in the spring then die back during June. In July or August light pink flowers spring up from the ground. The flowers are very dramatic as they form in a cluster at the top of a 12-18” stem. The bulbs multiply very rapidly so it a good idea to divide every 5 years after they have finished flowering. They grow best in full sun but they are very durable and tolerate less than perfect growing conditions or soil.
As the Easter season approaches this lovely flower reminds us of the true meaning of the season.
“Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead!…” Mark 16:6
